It’s easy to guess what adventure travel entails. The name says it all, right?
Adventure travel is pushing your ski tips off the edge of a helicopter and free-falling into untouched powder. Adventure travel is running a safari marathon past zebras and lions. Adventure travel is mountain unicycling — yes, it’s a real thing.
Except… for most people, adventure travel has nothing to do with extreme sports. So what is it? We like the definition offered up by the Adventure Travel Trade Association, which states that to be considered adventure travel, an activity must contain three ingredients: physical activity, a connection to nature and an immersive cultural experience.1
The physical part doesn’t have to be extreme or require a high level of fitness. However, adventure travel does involve a few more risks and expenses than a more sedate vacation. That’s why you always need travel insurance for adventure travel. And if you’re an especially adventurous traveler, an annual plan might be the wisest (and most affordable) choice.
That depends on the activities you’re planning to take part in. Allianz Travel Insurance does not cover any losses resulting from extreme, high-risk sports or activities. These include (but aren’t limited to) the following:
An activity may be excluded even if it’s not specifically named in your plan. Travel insurance can cover injuries or other losses resulting from more typical adventure travel activities, such as:

Adventure travel isn’t a one-and-done pursuit. For many travelers, it’s a passion.
If you find yourself planning two, three, or more active vacations in a year, then it’s time to think about protecting them all with a single travel insurance plan. An annual travel insurance plan safeguards every trip you take in a 365-day period, as long as your destination is 100+ miles from home. (Some exclusions do apply, so check your plan documents for details.)
Active travelers like annual travel insurance because:
Going off the beaten path is one of the top reasons people choose adventure travel. But what happens if you get hurt while hiking in the wilderness and you need a medical evacuation? All of Allianz Partners’ AllTrips plans include generous emergency transportation benefits as well as emergency medical benefits, which can reimburse you for covered medical expenses in case of a covered illness or injury.
And here’s something important to know: The limits on these benefits are defined per insured person, per trip. Why is that good? Let’s say you buy AllTrips Prime, which has a $20,000 limit on emergency medical. On a trek in Chile, you have to be hospitalized for altitude sickness. The medical bills total $7,000. Five months later, you fall while hiking Mount Fuji in Japan and you suffer a compound fracture of your leg. The bill this time: $18,000. Your annual plan can reimburse eligible expenses for both emergencies, because the limit resets for each trip. (And next year, maybe choose less adventurous adventure travel?)
If you’re joining a tour or taking a cruise, chances are high that your trip costs are non-refundable. Annual travel insurance with trip cancellation benefits and trip interruption benefits can reimburse your prepaid, non-refundable expenses if you have to cancel or cut short your trip due to a covered reason.
How much trip cancellation insurance do you need? The median price of an 8-night adventure travel itinerary is $3,000, according to the Adventure Travel Trade Association.1 Coincidentally, the popular AllTrips Prime plan includes up to $3,000 in trip interruption/cancellation benefits (per person, per year). Perfect! If you’re planning to spend more on your trips, AllTrips Premier offers higher benefit limits.
If you’re traveling with your bicycle, skis, camera, binoculars, camping gear, or other adventure travel accessories, baggage loss/damage benefits are a must. Your annual plan can reimburse you for the actual price, actual cash value, repair or replacement of your stuff— whichever is less, based on the limits in your insurance policy’s letter of confirmation. (Exclusions apply, including maximum limits for high-value items, and you’ll need receipts or proofs of purchase to get the maximum reimbursement for your items.)
Baggage delay benefits come in handy, too. Say you land in New Zealand, but your bags end up in South Africa. Travel insurance can reimburse you for necessary, eligible purchases—like clothing and toiletries—when your bags are delayed for a certain amount of time.
Adventure travel involves a little more risk and uncertainty than other types of travel. You might find yourself in a remote village where no one speaks your language. You might need to change your itinerary midway through your trip because a road is washed out. You might need to find a doctor to refill an important prescription. For all these scenarios and more, 24-hour assistance is there for you. Our team provides expert help dealing with travel emergencies worldwide. Download the Allyz® app before you go for rapid access to assistance, plus global doctor visits, local emergency numbers, and more.
