Definition: SmartBenefits® are a suite of special travel-delay and baggage-delay benefits available with certain plans from Allianz Global Assistance. With SmartBenefits®, you can opt to receive a fixed inconvenience payment of $100 per insured person, per day, for a covered travel delay or baggage delay (up to the maximum no-receipts limit). No receipts are required — just proof of a covered delay. You may receive this payment automatically if your covered travel delay occurs on a flight monitored by Allianz Global Assistance. To be eligible for a proactive payment, submit your flight itinerary online before you travel.
If your covered expenses during an eligible travel delay or baggage delay exceed $100, you still may submit a claim with receipts for the remaining expenses, up to the maximum benefit limit specified in your plan. You’ll need to provide proof of expenses incurred over the $100 fixed payment.
Example: Your flight to Jamaica is delayed due to icy conditions at Chicago O’Hare International Airport. What a terrible start to your vacation! Then, you get a text from Allianz Global Assistance who has been monitoring your flight status, based off the flight information you provided. Because the announced delay meets the threshold specified in your travel insurance plan, you’re eligible for an automatic payment of $100 to compensate you for a covered travel delay. You opt to receive the payment on your debit card — now you have some money for meals, etc., while your trip is delayed.
