You’re a travel planning pro. You’ve got your hotels and air travel booked. You just ordered one of those high-tech, anti-theft fanny packs. And of course you bought travel insurance well in advance, so your trip is protected.
But then, your travel plans shift. Maybe you have to change the dates of your trip. Maybe you need to add a person to your policy. Or maybe you need to update the total cost of your vacation.
Can you change or cancel your travel insurance plan? Here’s what you need to know.
Let’s say you buy OneTrip Basic to protect your upcoming cruise. Then, you learn that you could save a lot of money by purchasing an annual plan, such as AllTrips Prime, to cover all the trips you’re taking in the next 365 days. So, can you change your travel insurance plan?
Yes—as long as you haven’t left on your trip or filed a claim. You have two options:
Tip: If you’re upgrading to a plan that offers coverage for pre-existing medical conditions, you must purchase that plan within 14 days of paying your initial trip deposit. Keep that timeline in mind if you want to upgrade to a plan with this benefit.
That depends on the type of change you want to make.
Once you’ve departed on your trip, you can’t cancel your plan, switch to a different travel insurance plan, or add travelers to your plan.
You may be able to change the dates on your travel insurance plan. Say you travel to Singapore to help your grandmother recover from a fall, and then you decide you need to stay another week. Contact us and we’ll help you extend your coverage dates. (If your nonrefundable trip costs increase, the cost of your insurance may also increase.)
Your small-group tour of Ireland is scheduled to depart September 12. Then, you have to reschedule because of a family emergency. The tour operator allows you to switch your dates to April—but what about your travel insurance?
We’re happy to help you change your coverage dates to match your new trip dates. Your new return date must be within 770 days of when you purchased your policy. If you haven’t already departed on your trip or filed a claim, you can use the online plan management tool to change your coverage dates.
If your original travel dates have passed (and you haven’t started your trip or filed a claim) just send us the following information:
Forward your documents to AgentServices@AllianzAssistance.com. In the subject line, please include “Date Change Request” and your plan number. You can also fax the documents to (804) 673-1598. Please include your plan number on all documents. Once we receive these items, our team will review your request within 3-5 business days.
Please note that if your trip cost or duration changes, the cost of your travel protection plan may also change.
You may request a change in your return date anytime before your original coverage end date. If the change results in an increase in plan costs, you’ll have to pay the increase. If your plan cost decreases as a result of the change, we’ll refund the difference.
Tip: If your trip is extended because of a covered travel delay, trip interruption, medical emergency or other covered reason, you don’t have to request a change to your coverage dates. We will extend your coverage period until you are able to return home or to your point of origin (whichever comes first), or until you arrive at a medical facility for further care following a medical repatriation or trip interruption.
If you’re not completely satisfied, you have up to 15 days (or longer, depending on your state of residence) to request a refund, as long as you haven't departed for your trip or filed a claim. The easiest way to cancel your travel insurance is to use our online plan management tool. You can also contact us for help.
Once the review window has passed, you can’t cancel your travel insurance policy—even if you end up canceling your trip. However, you may be able to change the coverage dates so that your plan protects the next trip you take. You can use the online plan management tool to change your coverage dates and certain other details, as long you haven’t filed a claim and your original departure date hasn’t yet passed.
Want to add rental car protection? You can purchase the OneTrip Rental Car Protector as a standalone plan. It provides primary coverage for covered collision, loss and damage up to $50,000, almost anywhere in the world. You also get 24-hour emergency assistance and other benefits for only $11 per calendar day. (Benefits/coverage may vary by state, and sublimits may apply. Please see your plan for full details.) Get a quote.
Want to add the Cancel Anytime upgrade to your plan? Cancel Anytime can reimburse 80% of your unused, pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs if you cancel your trip for almost any unforeseeable reason your plan does not already cover. It’s available as an upgrade to the OneTrip Prime and OneTrip Premier plans. However, you can’t purchase Cancel Anytime more than 14 days after your initial trip deposit. (Cancel Anytime is not offered in all states.) Contact us to ask about adding Cancel Anytime.
Maybe you made an error when you originally entered your trip details, or maybe circumstances have changed. Contact us as soon as possible if you need to amend any other travel insurance details, such as:
Other than changes to the coverage end date, any change to your policy must be requested prior to your original departure date.
At Allianz Travel Insurance, we understand that life happens. If you need to change your travel insurance plan, let us know as soon as possible. The sooner you request modifications to your policy, the more likely it is that we’ll be able to help.
