The state of Idaho hosts a picturesque ski destination known as Schweitzer Mountain. Three mountain ranges surround this scenic ski area and the sparkling waters of Lake Pend Oreille are just minutes away. Schweitzer Mountain has almost 3,000 acres where visitors can ski with abandon and it is a relaxing destination for vacationers who yearn for a weekend away. Schweitzer Mountain also provides plenty of entertainment for tourists who desire spending a week or more in this breathtaking area.

Location of Schweitzer Mountain

Schweitzer Mountain is situated 60 miles south of the Canadian border and just 12 miles from the city of Sandpoint, Idaho. The bustling city of Spokane, Washington, is just over an hour drive from this ski destination. Whether you are flying into Spokane International Airport or driving from your hometown, purchasing travel insurance is a wise way to ensure that no mishaps hinder your vacation plans.

Lodging

Visitors have numerous options for comfortable lodging at Schweitzer Mountain or in Sandpoint. Whether you choose a chain hotel or opt for European-inspired quarters at the rustic Selkirk Lodge, you will find homey accommodations that provide soothing rest after your days on the slopes. Other popular options include the contemporary White Pine Lodge and the Scotchman View Condominiums with a lake view.

Dining

If your culinary preferences lean toward fine dining, you will be able to try fresh regional cuisine at the Gourmandie Restaurant in White Pine Lodge. The lovely restaurant features farmstead cheeses, cured meats, and local and international wines and beer. The Chimney Rock Grill also offers fine dining where you can order pasta, steaks, seafood or a gourmet salad. It has two fireplaces that give this restaurant a cozy, rustic ambiance. If you are craving gourmet pizza, visit Sam's Alley. You can create your own pie or buy the pizza by the slice. Burgers, deli sandwiches, ethic cuisines and delectable sweets are all available just a short distance from the ski slopes.

The Allure of the Area

In 2011, the city of Sandpoint rose to national attention, thus bringing the Schweitzer Mountain area into the public eye. It was voted "Most Beautiful City in America." Rand McNally and USA Today bestowed the honor upon the town. The lush vistas of the Cabinet Mountains toward the east and the Selkirk Mountains in the northwest, combined with the pristine lake in the heart of the town, make this city a perfect location to spend time outdoors.

Activities in Nearby Sandpoint and Schweitzer Village

Snow skiing, going on a wild snowmobile ride, exploring the area in snowshoes and tubing down Hermit's Hollow are all exciting ways to pass the time in the winter months, but there are also plenty of outdoor activities during the summer. These include hiking, swimming, and other water sports. You can also ride horses, play a round of golf, go for a scenic drive, view wildlife and rock climb during the warm weather. If you have children traveling with you, there are plenty of kid's activities available in Schweitzer Village, including Kids' Night Out. This is a fun-filled event held every Saturday night and gives the kids - and the parents - a break. The entire family can enjoy hot cocoa and s'mores at one of the nightly Village Campfires. The Village also offers scavenger hunts, craft lessons, and family-friendly movies with showings three times each day at the Selkirk Movie Theater.

The grownups in your party can enjoy a luxurious massage at the Solstice Spa. This is an effective way to work out the kinks after an exhilarating day on the slopes. You can also visit the Pend Oreille Winery to taste test their delicious vintages. The winery is also home to a gift shop and the Bistro Rouge, where you can dine on delectable offerings. Shoppers will marvel at the offerings available at the Cedar Street Bridge Public Market, a unique market with trendy boutiques, crafts by local artists, bistros, coffee shops and more. It is actually located on an old, historic bridge that crosses Sand Creek.

Nightlife

Tourists will find plenty of entertainment available in the evenings at this ski destination. Enjoy a tasty appetizer and some brews with friends at the Taps Lounge or the Pucci Pub. At the Taps Lounge, there is live music and a dance floor that lets you groove to the music until the wee hours of the morning. You can also participate in the Great Beer Blast at Schweitzer Mountain Resort. This event sends guests on a beer scavenger hunt in the five most popular nightspots in the Village. If a restful evening is on your agenda, you can take in a live performance at the historic Panida Theater in Sandpoint. Travelers who visit in February can attend the annual Winter Carnival that lasts 10 days. You can ride a sleigh, view fireworks, watch a parade, participate in a chili cook-off, see a laser light show and much more.

The austere beauty and variety of entertainment available in this undiscovered region makes it an ideal travel destination that is sure to rejuvenate even the weariest traveler. The various activities and the hospitable citizens will keep you and your traveling companions coming back year after year.
