Cliffside resorts. Majestic gray whales. Breathtaking golf courses. A vacation to Cabo San Lucas is about so much more than sipping tequila (although we won’t say no to a poolside margarita.)
Anytime is a great time to visit Cabo . After Hurricane Odile hit Cabo San Lucas in 2014, this beach town at the tip of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula was rapidly rebuilt. The weather’s sunny for most of the year, and the high temperatures rarely dip below 75 degrees.1 Wondering what to do and where to stay in gorgeous Cabo San Lucas? Read our five-minute guide.
Lover’s Beach
As soon as you arrive, the first thing you’ll want to do is visit Cabo’s beautiful beaches. But don’t let the stunning scenery distract you from the danger: many of Cabo’s beaches are unsafe for swimmers, with powerful currents and crashing waves. If you want to get wet, we recommend:
Don’t miss a boat tour of Land’s End and El Arco, the rock formations that made Cabo famous. Once the sun sets, it’s time to hit Cabo Wabo Cantina. Opened in 1990 by Van Halen front man Sammy Hagar, the bar grew along with the town and now is a multi-level destination with live music every night. Order a margarita with the house tequila, wave to Sammy if you see him, and party on.
El Arco
If you prefer wildlife to nightlife, there are plenty of fun things to do in Cabo San Lucas. Try a whale-watching boat tour with Whale Watch Cabo, a company that guarantees whale sightings while observing respectful and sustainable practices. For undersea adventures, Cabo Pulmo Marine Park offers spectacular diving and snorkeling tours.
The Resort at Pedregal is a cliffside luxury destination where guests stay in villas with terraces, private plunge pools and rainforest showers. Best of all are the concierge services: “Concierge Clefs d’Or will accommodate every guest request so long as it is morally, legally, and humanly possible,” the resort promises.
Another high-end hotel is Secrets Puerto Los Cabos, an adults-only resort. Secrets is a step above other all-inclusive resorts, offering 10 restaurants, unlimited top-shelf drinks, wait service at the pool and beach, and 24-hour concierge services.
Budget travelers wondering where to stay in Cabo San Lucas will do best to seek out smaller Cabo San Lucas hotels. Los Milagros Hotel isn’t on the beach, but offers pretty gardens and warm service. El Nido at Hacienda Escondida is an authentically Mexican bed-and-breakfast with three-walled palapa rooms that open onto beautiful and sweeping mountain views.
While in Cabo, you’ll want to try the local fare and there are plenty of restaurants in Cabo San Lucas that serve memorable Mexican food and the freshest seafood. Foodies should reserve a table at Manta, a contemporary restaurant run by chef Enrique Olvera. “Must-orders include local chocolate clams with yuzu and habanero-soy; sashimi with avocado and wasabi; whatever the catch of the day is; and amazing fried chicken,” Zagat says.3
The best of Baja cuisine can be found at Edith’s, which specializes in locally sourced seafood with a Guerreran twist. Try the Aztec tortilla soup, grilled lobster or mesquite-grilled steak. For standout ceviche — lime-cured raw seafood — head to local favorite Ceviche Factory or La Roca at the Grand Solmar.
